I had to have my blood pressure done today and now I'm a bit worried as the doctor said its high, I asked him if I should be worried and he said no but I have to go back next week and have it done again.  I'm trying to relax and be normal but I've never had high blood pressure before and now I'm feeling anxious about it.  Everyone at home has tried to re assure me that everyone has it from time to time.  I think its my travel and work situation thats stressing me out thats causing it but I have no idea,  all I know is I feel quite scared now.  I feel fine apart from that and would never have gone to the doctor if I hadn't have had conjunctivitus.

Has anyone got any advice?

yes, stop worrying Gem, could

yes, stop worrying Gem, could be why you have felt tired and out of sorts lately. I have high BP, for years, do as the doc says, have it re-checked, take any meds if needed and look after yourself. That's it really. Meditiationg, gentle exercise can all help.

Hi Lou, Try taking a bit of

Hi Lou,

Try taking a bit of exercise every day and while you're walking don't allow yourself to worry about anything.  Try some positive affirmations as you walk along.  Then relax when you get home.

My dad had high blood pressure for the first time ever recently and he's 91!  He didn't let it bother him at all and when he went for a re-check a couple of days ago it was fine.

Try not to worry, blood pressure really does fluctuate.

the doctos say anything 120 over ?...

the doctors say any BP of 120 over 80 is high. Try not to worry about it, go back and have it rechecked. It could be that YOUR normal BP is slightly higher than average. Your GP may decide to put you on medication to help lower it but regular exercise and reducing stress levels will also help.

It could be the other way around and be continuously too low, where there is nothing the GP can do, but you are prone to just flaking out or feeling sick and fainting occassionally. Mine at its lowest was 80 over 50 and the nurse checking it actually swore and asked how I was still awake at three oclock in the afternoon! its hovered at 90 over 60 for years now and I still have odd moments if I dont eat and exercise regularly where i could start to feel ill and need to lie down wherever I am.

Hi Lou,Please try not to

Hi Lou,

Please try not to worry about your blood pressure too much.  It is a well known fact even among doctors that patients have higher readings in the surgery anyway, so your nervousness about having it done may have pushed it up slightly!!!  I would suggest that you get a home BP monitor which you can pick up quite cheaply these days.  I got one for £10 from Asda a few weeks ago as I am wanting to keep an eye on mine as I have also had quite high readings over the last couple of years, at around 130/90.  It's now around 125/75-80 which isn't too bad. Also having your BP taken in the morning will always give a higher reading than later on in the day when BP oftern drops.

Please try and not worry too much about it, stress and worry are the worst things for BP, but it is oftern genetic as well.  If you have any excess weight it would be very beneficial to try and cut it as apparently weight loss reduces BP immediately.  That said, slim people can have high BP as well.  Apparently eating celery reduces BP.  Also exercise is very good, but relaxing exercise such as yoga, t'ai chi and Qi Gong are meant to be really good for keeping BP balanced.  Regular meditation with breathing exercises are good.  Also regarding salt, you will be advised to cut ity out, I would suggest to everyone cut out all white salt as they all have anti=caking agent in and are really bad for us.  I always take himalayan salt on my meals now and I think that is why my blood pressure has dropped slightly.  Stay away from processed meals, in fact eating organic fruit and veg and little meat should help. Also take a high vit c supplement.

Did anyone watch 'The Food

Did anyone watch 'The Food Hospital' on channel four?  They cured all sorts of ailments with food not drugs.  I'm sure they helped someone with high blood pressure.

The series has finished for the moment but they have a website, I haven't looked it up but I'm sure it's easy to find.  It might have somemore helpful tips in addition to Jophiel and everyone elses good advice.

I am

going thru the same thing at the moment Lou. Before Christmas my BP was high so I had to get it done again at the begining of January. It was a bit lower but still too high. The top figure was 175 but Ican't remember the bottom figure. My next appt is on Wednesday. So in an attempt to get it down I have been meditating every day and will make sure I do untill Weds. I have managed to lose a bit of weight as well. Seabee mentioned the Food Hospital programme. I saw it and they were doing an experiment to see if dark chocolate reduced BP. So I have been having a square of dark choc, 74% cocoa, every night. Hopefully these things will help as I reallly don't want meds but if I have to I have to.

There is some good advice above so try some of the things out. My problem is I don't move about enough ( cos of Muscular Dystrophy) but there is nothing I can do about that so I may need meds. Try not to worry as that won't help. Let us know how you get on.

Thank you everyone, yesterday

Thank you everyone, yesterday I had a bad headache and was really worrying about it, today I feel fine so who knows whether its ok or not. I have been slacking on the diet front and with the exercise so maybe that will help. I went out last night and relaxed, even pulled! which relaxed me even more!!!!

Anyway, today I went for a walk and visited a couple of people which was very nice and I enjoyed myself, the trouble with me is all I do is work.  I dont have a lot to do outside work.  I am going to do a workout tomorrow and keep myself calm.

I shall let you know how I get on.

This is funny for me to read

I feel im seeing it to kick start me into doing something. I have HB too and been on perindipol for years now. However, pretty much since my mum died my interest in everything has went downill and I have been very laxidasacle about my medication to the point of not taking them, which is stupid and dangerous and selfish to those around me should something happen to me, but you dont think clearly in grief and thankfully I have had nudges pushing me to check it, one being for the well woman clinic which was strange, as I thought that was for 45plus, and im 43. Anyway, since early december I have been back every week getting it checked as I was started on lowest dose to break me in, im back to my 8mg which is what I was but its still not regulating. I know I should excersise and lose weight but I dont, and now im reading this, unusal topic, I feel I was meant to see and hear this, I realise how important this is so thankyou for voicing your worries as you helped me too, remembering me my role of being healthy is important in this too x x

HIGH BP

Great advice given by all the above;  I don't think anyone has mentioned smoking, though, which is a significant factor.  I know a couple of people who've had high BP and been advised by their doc to stop smoking.

Not that I'm assuming you smoke, Gemmagic! just trying to be helpful.

Had

my BP checked yesterday and it has gone down!!!! So something is working. It's still too high tho. I think the meditation is helping although I find it really hard to clear my mind, it's getting easier the more I do. Just gotta wait to hear from the Doc as to what happens now. Hopefully if I keep doing what I am doing I can get away with not having meds. We'll see.

TEA - tee hee!

Have just read in the newspaper supplement that the latest thinking is:

8 cups of tea a day helps to reduce high blood pressure!

(I am thrilled, as I'm a complete tea-pot.)

Hello everyone.    I heard

Hello everyone.

I heard about that 8 cups of tea thing as well and my dad is a huge tea drinker and his blood pressure is high as well.

I went and had it checked again last week.  Its still high but I'm not that worried about it this week.  I'm not sure why, it scared the bits out of me last week, where as I have come to the conclusion that it may have been high for a while and it hasn't stopped me.  Iended up in tears at the doctor and he asked me if anything was wrong, I explained how things have been for me and we came decided that for now its probably my job and travel that are stressing me out. I don't feel unwell in any other way and if there was an illness making my blood pressure go up I'm sure I would know by now about it! (I hope)

Anyway I have to go back in a couple of weeks and try to keep myself calm about it. I was very nervous about it on friday and got myself into a state about it.  Which probably didn't help.
