I wasn't a fan of kindle

I wasn't a fan of kindle either, but now think they're probably better for the environment rather than using loads of paper and ink to make books...books are lovely though!

Happy reading Jilly,

i would love a ereader

Hi,

Lucky you, Im in the process of stopping smoking and saving the money to buy an ebook reader.

There are lots and lots of free ebooks (Ive already got a load), but you have to do something to them to make them work on a Kindle. (Calibre, or drm thing, There are a couple of forums that explain it much better than I can). Not sure if Kindle can read pdf books, but Obooko has a lot of interesting books and http://www.free-ebooks.net has some good books. Thats one thing Ive found with the Kindle, is that it locks you into only buying from Amazon, whereas the Sony or Kobo doesnt.

Have lots of fun with your new Kindle.

Seabee - I wasn't sure I'd like it as to me NOTHING beats getting my mitts on a new book lol, but  I'm loving it and you're right about the paper...and it was either kindle or more bookshelves, just not good at de-cluttering books, got rid of alot last year that I wish I could just read a bit of now and agin Jxxx

Thanks Jilly

I want a Kobo Touch and cant afford that and smoking, so the nasty cigs had to go. 2 and half days (and using patches) later Im surprisingly not going crackers or losing my temper.

I can find you a link to a couple of forums all about readers if you want.

I'm also...

... a bookworm, and both my sister and mum have a kindle. However i just can't accept reading a book on something electronic at the mo. To me it's all about the touch, feel, smell of a new book, and the feeling of excitement and expectation you get when you first open it and read that delicious first paragraph ........ See, I've got it bad!!! Infact, it's the same with old books too, and books I've read before a thousand times, like holding an old friend in your hands.....*sighs* !!!!lol!!! Yeah I know - completely dotty ;-).

Happy reading

I just got a kindle for Yule. You can use the program calibre to convert e.pub or mobi format e-books to kindle. I haven't bought a single book for my kindle!

I LOVE the smell and texture of a real book, but hubby and I are such avid readers, we just don't have the room to keep them! I acan get through 3 books a week from the library, so i only bought books I will re-read : and i have HUNDREDS! AND I used to give away dozens to charity shops too. So an e-reader was the best option for me. And it's handy for slipping in your handbag.

There will always be "special interest" books that won't be published in e-book format, but snoop about, a lot are. I have some Kate West books on my kindle, it just takes a bit of searching.

good luck, happy reading.

Im with you Star nothing like

Im with you Star nothing like a good book.

I didnt mind reading the odd story book but I mainly have reference books on herbs and healing things so I like to flick through to look for something.

I gave mine to my husband, never thought, I should have wrapped it up for Xmas lol!!!  He uses it on the train to work, Im just wondering how many people have commented quietly on the pink case it has!!

I'm with you too Star, I

I'm with you too Star, I can't resist the feel of a book.  Books are almost as important to me as music and I love looking at them sitting there on my bookshelves.  I have far too many though, but I could never stop buying books.  I feel that simply downloading them on to a device kind of devalues them.  Don't get me wrong they're a great idea and I do like my gadgetry, I am worried that books will one day be phased out and that would really make me sad, I think having everything at hand encourages one to flick through, a bit like mp3s encourage us to flick through songs without savouring the album.  Could you imagine life without bookshops? I can see the detrimental effect it is having on my children already, they don't appreciate books like I did as a child, it is all screens all the time, and although I want them to embrace technology, I really want them to cherish books.

However.........I do actually own a Sony E-reader, and my hubby owns one too!!!  I got a little fuchsia pink one secondhand, it isn't expandable and holds about 500 books.  I wanted something to hold pdf files and didn't want to be locked into the Amazon thing like I won't own an ipod because you're restricted by itunes.  It is a handy little device, but to be honest I won't stop buying books, in fact I've got 2 coming from Amazon  atm lol!!!!  A charity bookshop has just opened near me and it stocks loads of books and they're all 50p each.....happy days!!!!

I get all my books from

I get all my books from readitswapit.co.uk, keeps me from having to buy more bookshelves! The Oxfam shop near me also has a great selection of books! I am thinking about saving up for a Kindle though as I mainly read in bed and I'm sick of trying to hold a book up lol :)

Last night, when I said

Last night, when I said goodnight to my son I was delighted to see he was reading the Merchant of Venice for the second time, but my delight turned to dismay when he told me he wanted to download the book so he could read it on a screen rather than the page.

I proceeded to go on and on about the joy of holding a book and turning the pages etc etc.  Don't know if my words sank in though.

Oh dear, that's the future I'm afraid.

I totally agree with all of

I totally agree with all of you about there just being "something" about a book, there will be books that become favourites that I will buy as "books" but I am loving the kindle, It's just so light and I can pop it in my bag easily and it does't weigh me down. Love the speed the books arrive too and I feel like I'm saving paper!!!

Hi Jilly,

My husband wanted to buy me a kindle for xmas and for months I was looking forward to it but chickened out at the last moment (in queue waiting to buy and put it back) and am now regretting it!

I love my books and have hundreds (423 to count) but feel incredibly guilty because my husband has to carry them every time we move.

My birthday is next week so i've told my husband he can buy me one however I don't think it will every replace the cookbook in our house - a kindle with flour or oil on doesn't really appeal!!!

Hi Celticangel, Oh I hope you

Hi Celticangel,

Oh I hope you like it :) I can see where you're coming from with the cookbooks though - might not be sticky fingers friendly lol!

At least you can still get a "real book fix" updating your cookbook collection!!! Have a great birthday when it comes and let me know what you think of your new toy!!
